Set in a future ruined city overrun by biotechnology, the story follows a scavenger named Rachel who collects genetic experiments and discarded engineered organisms. The city is dominated by a massive engineered grizzly, and Rachel discovers an unusual sea-anemone–like creature she names Borne. The central pressure comes from surviving amid dangerous bioengineered life and the ethical and practical problems those creations introduce.
Tactile salvage runs, engineered creatures, and a colossal predator give the ruined city its grotesque texture and ethical strain. Sentences can be dense and image-heavy, sending readers into the texture of ruin rather than offering tidy worldbuilding. The narrative pace stays insistent; quieter reflective moments interrupt and deepen the unease rather than relieve it. Readers who want vivid sensory invention and moral ambiguity will find a lot to engage with, while those preferring clear exposition or light tone should be warned that mysteries and strangeness are left unresolved at times.

Initially associated with the New Weird literary genre, VanderMeer crossed over into mainstream success with his bestselling Southern Reach Series. The series' first novel, Annihilation, won the Nebula and Shirley Jackson Awards, and was adapted into a Hollywood film by director Alex Garland. Among VanderMeer's other novels are Shriek: An Afterword and Borne. He has also edited with his wife Ann VanderMeer such influential and award-winning anthologies as The New Weird, The Weird, and The Big Book of Science Fiction.
