A woman who works as a local tour guide becomes alarmed by disappearances and unsettling changes in her Brooklyn neighborhood and starts investigating.

Set during the American Civil War, the novel focuses on a freedwoman who takes a dangerous undercover role within a Confederate household to gather intelligence, while a man posing as a Confederate soldier is secretly working the same network for Union purposes.
