Reader fitReaders who like taut, character-driven speculative fiction with moral ambiguity
Set in a near-future Orange County, the novel follows an undercover narcotics agent embedded in a household of drug users while concealing his identity from both the police and his targets. As he inhabits both roles, the book tracks the psychological strain of addiction, surveillance, and the unraveling of self under prolonged deception.
Fast in its mounting psychological pressure and compact in scene work, the book rewards close attention to shifting loyalties and unreliable perception. The voice uses plain, often clipped narration and frequent interior distortion that creates an uneasy, hallucinatory texture; moments of dark humor puncture the dread. Structurally focused and character-centered rather than sprawling, it suits readers who prefer tight ethical puzzles and atmosphere over broad worldbuilding. Caveat: sustained drug-use content and deliberate disorientation can be intense for some readers.
